President Donald Trump, at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, expressed disappointment with NATO allies, specifically Spain, Italy, and the UK. He criticized their lack of immediate support for the U.S. in a potential conflict with Iran, calling their response a ‘bad moment’. Despite this, Trump later highlighted the ‘tremendous unification’ among NATO members, emphasizing mutual respect.
The UK’s new defense secretary acknowledged Trump’s critique. In an interview with Sky News, Wes Streeting mentioned that Europe will eventually appreciate Trump for encouraging NATO allies to take greater responsibility for their security.
“The first thing you do is you don’t suck up,” Streeting remarked. “My impression is President Trump and his administration are not looking for that. He’s a straight talker.”
Streeting’s remarks come as Andy Burnham takes over as the UK Prime Minister, suggesting a shift in the UK’s relationship with the U.S. while maintaining a refusal to back U.S. military action against Iran.
Streeting took office on July 20, coinciding with Burnham’s appointment as prime minister. He acknowledged the unique nature of the U.S.-UK alliance, citing historical, cultural, and political ties, alongside shared and self-interest.
During his initial week, Streeting contacted U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to discuss maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and NATO commitments.
Streeting explained, “In my first week as defense secretary, I have seen how close and integral our defense and security relationship is.” He expressed eagerness to meet his American counterpart, maintaining that the UK does not support offensive action in Iran but is committed to working on mutual defense objectives.
Trump has consistently urged European NATO members to increase defense spending, criticizing their inadequate contributions to the alliance’s security.
Streeting noted, “Europe will appreciate Trump for urging us to end dependency on the U.S. and to strengthen our own defenses.” He emphasized past U.S. frustrations with Europe’s defense contributions under both Democratic and Republican presidencies.
Streeting asserted the UK’s capability to work with European allies and the U.S. without excessive dependence on them.
