Facing significant life decisions can feel overwhelming. Situations like considering a new job, ending a relationship, relocating, or changing careers present challenges. How do you ensure you make the right decision?
According to Ruth Chang, a professor of jurisprudence at the University of Oxford, it’s crucial to differentiate between big choices and hard choices. In her research on decision-making, Chang explains that some major decisions, although life-changing, are straightforward. For instance, opting for a medical operation that cures a serious illness is an easy choice.
What makes a decision hard is when two options are equally matched. One choice may excel in some areas, while the other is better in different respects, but neither is clearly superior overall, says Chang. This is when the stress of decision-making occurs.
Identifying a Hard Choice: The ‘Small Improvement Test’
To determine if you’re facing a challenging decision, Chang suggests using her ‘small improvement test.’ Imagine you have job offers on both the West and East Coasts. One might be slightly better in certain aspects, but overall, they’re balanced.
Consider increasing the salary for the West Coast job by a small amount. If this increase doesn’t significantly shift the balance in favor of the West Coast job, you are likely dealing with a tough decision.
Importance of Commitment
Chang emphasizes the importance of being open to commitment. By choosing a particular path and fully committing to it, you redefine yourself. This commitment allows you to embrace new identities, whether it’s a particular career or personal relationship.
She likens this process to romantic relationships. There isn’t a single perfect partner; instead, commitment transforms someone into the right partner for you.
The Role of Hard Choices
Hard decisions provide opportunities to define our identities as different kinds of agents. It’s a personal choice rather than seeking an external answer. Creating personal value through commitment is empowering.
Chang uses the analogy of love to illustrate this concept. The idea of the perfect partner is a myth. Instead, commitment makes someone the right person for you.
Choosing the Cautious Path
While some admire those who take risks, most people tend toward caution. Evolutionarily, this makes sense, as risks can lead to danger. However, the ability to commit allows you to actively shape your life instead of merely reacting to it.
Decisions During the Pandemic
The pandemic slowed down many aspects of life, providing time for reflection. This pause is a chance to reassess life directions. Consider the questions like, ‘Who can I commit to being?’ and find multiple answers that will guide future decision-making.
