Expecting a Third Time
In late 2024, I learned I was expecting my third child. My previous pregnancy ended heartbreakingly, with my first baby passing away in utero at 18 weeks. Despite my third pregnancy progressing seemingly well, I carried an underlying uncertainty. This anxiety was confirmed during the 20-week anatomy scan, revealing issues with the baby’s bones. Her limbs were significantly behind in development, and her skull had an unusual lemon-like shape.
Seeking Answers
I consulted my OBGYN, suspecting osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) caused my first baby’s death. He suggested another form of skeletal dysplasia, leading to a referral to a maternal fetal specialist for deeper evaluation.
Diagnosis and Devastation
The specialist identified fractures and confirmed the likelihood of OI, also known as brittle bone disease—a rare genetic disorder leading to fragile bones. The prognosis seemed lethal, and termination was strongly advised. This news plunged me into profound depression.
Finding Hope
Prayer provided solace amid despair. My pursuit for answers extended to the internet, where I connected with other parents and adults living with OI. Their stories highlighted thriving lives despite the disorder, encouraging me to fight alongside my daughter.
A Birth Plan of Determination
Determined to save my baby, I partnered with a maternal fetal specialist who offered an innovative cesarean birth plan. The procedure, aimed at minimizing bone breakage risks, involved accessing my previous C-section scar, removing the baby and uterus, then methodically separating the uterus from the baby.
Introducing Dani
On July 7, 2025, my daughter Dani was born, carrying a unique mutation in the 17th exon of her COL1A2 gene. Resolute in ensuring Dani’s comfort and treatment, I advocated for pain relief and vital NICU care. Despite doctors urging a wait-and-see approach, immediate action was necessary to safeguard her life and health.
Understanding OI’s Impact
OI challenges Dani’s life significantly. Her care demands vigilance and precise handling to prevent fractures. Routine tasks necessitate careful planning to protect her vulnerable body.
Daily Life with OI
Dani’s life mirrors typical babyhood but requires specialized attention. While physically behind, therapies aid her progress alongside adaptive equipment like activity chairs and wheelchairs. Home stabilization techniques help manage fractures.
Resilience and Hope
Defying doctors who predicted a brief life span, Dani thrives, inspiring surprise and admiration. She embodies joy, consistently challenging stereotypes of life with OI.
Raising Awareness
The journey fostered personal faith and a commitment to spreading love and awareness. Emphasizing factual information, I aim to equip parents with knowledge, navigating their unique paths without prejudice.
Documenting this experience on social media, I strive to educate others about osteogenesis imperfecta, advocating understanding and compassion.
