McDonough recalled a difficult phase when his career seemed at risk. He was let go from a show for refusing to kiss a co-star, a decision rooted in his deep love for his wife. This choice triggered a series of professional setbacks as he faced industry rejection, leaving him with heavy losses, including his home and cars.
During this period, McDonough struggled with alcohol. He admitted that he had always been a drinker, but after being blacklisted, it became a significant issue. Actor Luke Perry offered kindness and support, allowing McDonough and his family to stay with him after losing their home.
McDonough described a turning point prompted by his wife’s tough love. She issued him a stark choice between his family and his drinking. This ultimatum motivated McDonough to quit alcohol and shift his focus to serving a higher purpose.
He credits his wife of 25 years, Ruve, with helping him embrace a new direction. Together, they have collaborated on several projects, such as “Boon,” “The Warrant: Breaker’s Law,” “Homestead,” and “The Last Rodeo.” Their partnership has significantly contributed to his current success.
