Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed his plan to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September, despite calls for his arrest by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“I’m going to New York,” Netanyahu stated during an interview with Sean Hannity after meeting U.S. President Donald Trump. He emphasized his intent to address the Assembly and speak out against what he perceives as hateful rhetoric from Mamdani.
Netanyahu criticized Mamdani for attempting to incite divisions among New Yorkers, particularly against Jewish communities.
Zohran Mamdani has accused Netanyahu of war crimes due to Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Mamdani described Netanyahu as responsible for atrocities and genocide against Palestinians. Despite acknowledging New York City’s lack of legal authority to arrest under the International Criminal Court’s warrant, Mamdani encouraged federal intervention.
Netanyahu countered by accusing Mamdani of spreading hate and lies, comparing the situation to historical periods of intense antisemitism. Meanwhile, Trump criticized Israel’s military actions for resulting in high casualties, aligning somewhat with Mamdani’s stance.
Netanyahu strongly denounced the International Criminal Court, calling it corrupt for targeting him while ignoring groups like Hezbollah. He expressed concern that such judgments could label U.S. leaders and soldiers as war criminals just for their associations.
Discussing his meeting with Trump, Netanyahu highlighted the strength of their alliance, dismissing critics who foresee diplomatic rifts. He stressed shared objectives between the U.S. and Israel, particularly concerning Iran.
