Netflix is diving into the spicy world of “Hot Ones.” The streaming platform announced it will launch a spinoff of the popular YouTube series hosted by Sean Evans, known for its unique interview format where celebrities face the challenge of eating progressively spicier chicken wings.
Named “Hot Ones: Extra Heat,” the new show will stream after select major live sporting events and significant premieres on Netflix. The first episode is scheduled for release on July 13, following the conclusion of the Home Run Derby, part of the Major League Baseball All-Star events.
This move is another sign of Netflix’s intensifying competition with YouTube. According to Nielsen, YouTube remains the top streaming service on American TV, with Netflix trailing. Netflix has recently collaborated with YouTube creators like children’s entertainer Ms. Rachel and science educator Mark Rober.
Sean Evans noted that while “Hot Ones: Extra Heat” will retain familiar elements, such as celebrity guests tackling spicy wings, the spin-off will have a significantly larger budget and aim to provide more spectacle. This includes relocating from the show’s traditional studio setup to diverse venues, with the first episode set in a college baseball stadium.
The new series will consist of 30-minute episodes, featuring famous figures enduring the heat. Despite the new project, Evans will continue to release new episodes of the original “Hot Ones” on YouTube weekly.
