New Jersey Congressman Tom Kean Jr. Absent Amid Medical Concerns

In Westfield, New Jersey, residents recently gathered to discuss affordable housing and new data centers with a state lawmaker. However, Steve McCabe, an 80-year-old retired lawyer, voiced another concern: the whereabouts of Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr.

State Senator Jon Bramnick could not provide an answer regarding Kean’s prolonged medical absence, which has lasted nearly three months. Recalling their time in the Legislature together, Bramnick emphasized Kean’s dedication, even citing his willingness to drive through snow to cast votes. Currently, Kean’s absence has led to missing over 100 congressional votes, causing political ramifications. The district he represents is a top target for Democrats aiming to regain congressional control.

Harrison Neely, Kean’s campaign consultant, stated that the congressman’s absence is due to a medical emergency, promising transparency and a return to his duties soon. Meanwhile, Bramnick expressed that Kean’s absence signifies a serious situation.

The 7th Congressional District, which includes suburbs and President Trump’s Bedminster golf course, has fluctuated between parties in recent elections. Kean, a member of a prominent political family, took his last House vote on March 5. Since then, the situation has drawn increased national attention. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson stated expectations for Kean’s return and transparency regarding the issue.

Kean’s family has deep political roots, with his father a former governor and an ancestor as New Jersey’s initial leader post-independence. According to the New Jersey Globe, Kean recently expressed optimism about his recovery.

Some voters at the meeting expressed concern, including McCabe, who hoped Kean was not gravely ill. Bruce Paterson, a retired engineer and lifelong Democrat, mentioned his willingness to support Kean for state political balance.

A voter asked Bramnick about the possibility of taking Kean’s place if necessary. Bramnick reiterated Kean’s intention to run for reelection and questioned his own candidacy’s alignment with the modern Republican Party. While Bramnick has been critical of Trump, Kean has embraced the former President.

Meanwhile, Democratic primary candidates expressed criticisms of Kean’s absence. Michael Roth, a former Small Business Administration official, criticized Kean’s lack of communication. Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy pilot, pointed out his absence during the debate on funding for the Gateway Tunnel, a crucial infrastructure project.

Other Democratic candidates, Tina Shah and Brian Varela, also criticized Kean during debates. Despite critiques, Benjamin Dworkin of the Rowan Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship noted Kean’s financial advantage over his Democratic opponents, suggesting the key issue lies in his post-return effectiveness.
