Back in July, the New York Islanders announced an initiative to let fans design the team’s new third jersey. This move aimed to engage fans creatively and give them control over a typically contentious aspect of team branding.
The idea was that if fans were involved in the creation, they might be less critical of the final product. However, the outcome has not silenced critics. The team unveiled eight finalist designs, chosen for their potential as the future third jersey. Fans expressed dissatisfaction across social media platforms, criticizing all the options. Despite this, one of these designs will be chosen through a bracket system.
The options are not offensive, but they lack excitement. Each design has its distinct elements. If forced to choose, the bottom right design with a navy background, wordmark, and chest stripe might be the most appealing. The chest stripe recalls classic hockey jersey designs, offering some nostalgic appeal.
“These jerseys capture a unique period in Islanders’ history, offering fans a chance to influence the team’s visual identity.”
The Islanders’ history with third jerseys is mixed. From 2011 to 2014, they experimented with designs that did not leave lasting impressions. The current design tool provided by the team offered fans a user-friendly way to contribute, leading to high expectations for innovation.
Some fans noted similarities between the finalists and past jerseys, such as the Edmonton Oilers’ orange versions. Social media users, including those with rejected submissions, voiced their opinions on the team’s choices.
Despite the lukewarm reception, one of the eight jerseys will debut on the ice. The team’s announcement promised the winning designer a “VIP gameday experience.” With fans already appreciating the Islanders’ well-received home and away jerseys, the necessity of a third remains debatable.
