Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been charged with two counts of murder. The charges relate to the stabbing deaths of his parents in December 2025 at their home in Brentwood, California.
Prosecutors announced on Wednesday that a Los Angeles County grand jury has returned an indictment with new ‘special circumstance’ allegations. The indictment accuses Nick Reiner, 32, of committing the murders ‘by means of lying in wait,’ which is classified as a special circumstance under California law. Additional allegations include multiple murders and the personal use of a knife during the crimes.
These special-circumstance allegations serve as enhancements that can increase the potential punishment upon conviction. The Los Angeles Public Defenders office stated to Newsweek via email that they have no further comment on the case at this time.
In Reiner’s situation, the prosecutors allege both multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. This suggests the killings involved a concealed or surprise attack.
Los Angeles County officials state that the lying-in-wait allegation adds another layer of severity to the charges. If convicted as charged, Reiner might face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. However, a decision has not yet been made regarding the pursuit of capital punishment.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman remarked that the indictment includes an allegation that the murders were committed ‘by means of lying in wait.’ He described the case as ‘a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.’
