Nick Reiner, aged 32, stands accused of killing his parents, renowned film director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. He is petitioning a Los Angeles County court for access to funds from a trust set up by his parents. Reiner claims these funds are essential for his legal defense, which he believes is rightfully his.
The petition, filed by Reiner’s civil attorneys, argues that the trustees have unjustly withheld the money. It emphasizes Reiner’s presumed innocence and his entitlement to use his lawful resources for his defense. The trust reportedly holds assets worth at least $1.5 million, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.
Rob and Michele Reiner were tragically stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14. Nick Reiner was arrested shortly after and has pleaded not guilty to murder. Initially represented by Alan Jackson, a high-profile lawyer, Reiner’s defense funding faced setbacks when Jackson stepped down without disclosing reasons, and Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, decided against continuing payments for Jackson’s fees.
Reiner’s petition mentions that his parents established smaller individual trusts for their children alongside a larger family trust. Nick was supposed to receive half the money at age 30 and the remainder at 35, but he has not received any funds. Attorney Paul R. Kanin, overseeing the trust since February, has offered varied excuses for not releasing the money, citing concerns about Reiner’s competence.
The murder case progresses slowly, with a pretrial hearing slated for September. The death penalty is a possibility, but the District Attorney has not yet decided on pursuing it. Court-ordered secrecy has kept most case details, including autopsy findings, confidential, leaving many questions about the motive unanswered.
Alan Jackson, upon departing from the case, declared outside the court that legally, Nick is not guilty of murder. Meanwhile, Jake Reiner publicly described the situation as a ‘living nightmare,’ expressing deep anguish over the tragic loss and the implications involving his brother.
Rob Reiner’s legacy includes directing iconic films such as ‘This is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Stand By Me,’ and ‘A Few Good Men.’ Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, wedded Rob soon after they met during the making of ‘When Harry Met Sally…’. The couple was married for 36 years.
