Seoul, South Korea — North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile and additional weapons into the sea on Tuesday, according to South Korea’s military. This marks the latest in a string of demonstrations by North Korea this year.
The missile, launched from Jongju near North Korea’s west coast, traveled approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) over the body of water known as the Yellow Sea, which lies between the Korean peninsula and China. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff provided this information.
Besides the ballistic missile, North Korea also launched other projectiles, though details were not specified. The South Korean military, citing its strong alliance with the U.S., stated its readiness to repel any of North Korea’s provocations and enhanced its surveillance measures.

This recent launch is North Korea’s first weapons activity since April 19, when it fired multiple short-range missiles in what its state media labeled as a cluster bomb demonstration.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has focused on expanding his nuclear and missile capabilities after talks with President Trump fell apart in 2019. Despite President Trump’s desire to engage again, Pyongyang has resisted these efforts, insisting the U.S. drop demands for its nuclear disarmament as a precondition.
Kim has taken a hardline position against South Korea, labeling it as a permanent adversary and moving to sever all relations.
Earlier on Tuesday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, during a Cabinet meeting, emphasized strengthening the country’s military. He highlighted advancements in artificial intelligence, drone technology, and the possibility of obtaining a nuclear-powered submarine. These discussions form part of his diplomatic engagements with Washington.
Although Lee, known for advocating improved relations with North Korea, did not specifically comment on North Korean threats, he emphasized the need for South Korea to showcase its commitment to self-security. He argued that such a stance would also bolster the alliance with the United States.
