Romero had previously worked as a senior adviser to state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez. Upon entering the Assembly race, he quit his job, as required by ethics guidelines. Despite a clear path to victory, he exhausted his savings and struggled to find consulting work, preventing him from collecting unemployment benefits.
Romero later described the fundraiser as a ‘mistake’ and removed it. He reassured that he had not kept any funds donated.
Financial Adjustments and Support
Following the removal of the fundraiser, Romero shared that close friends stepped in to help financially during this transition period. He explained that these friends understood the political landscape and the challenges faced during breaks between jobs.
State payroll records indicate Romero earned $106,469 last year as a legislative aide. He resides with his partner in a Jackson Heights apartment, paying approximately $2,600 monthly rent.
