Oswego East Graduate Dominic Battista Prepares for MLB Career

An unexpected turn of events led Dominic Battista, an Oswego East High School graduate, to be selected in the MLB draft despite grappling with a hamate injury earlier in the season. Battista, committed to Illinois-Chicago, did not initially anticipate being in the draft conversation. However, as speculation grew, he was delighted. ‘It was in the back of my mind,’ Battista said. ‘But a few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined my name called out of high school.’

Everything shifted on Saturday when the Kansas City Royals picked Battista in the fourth round, 119th overall. Though unsigned currently, his inclination is to join the Royals’ system. ‘More than likely I will sign,’ Battista stated, considering future college options but preferring to start his professional career.

Battista was among three draftees from the Aurora-Elgin area this weekend. His achievements, coupled with impressive performances at high-profile showcases, elevated his profile among scouting circles. Post-injury, an uptick in scout attendance at games signaled his rising status. ‘Seeing scouts increased got my attention,’ he commented, maintaining his focus on playing baseball.

Graduation celebrates Battista’s transition into likely becoming a professional athlete by the week’s end. ‘It’s a unique opportunity,’ he noted, determined to appreciate it fully.

Another local talent, St. Charles North alum Jayden Lobliner, was drafted in the ninth round by the St. Louis Cardinals. After developing his skills at Kansas State and San Diego, the catcher is closer to fulfilling his childhood dream of playing in the majors. Lobliner attributes his draft opportunity to his defensive prowess—he was recognized as the West Coast Conference’s defensive player of the year.

Lobliner quickly advanced to the Cardinals’ spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida, eager to embark on his professional journey. ‘You’re ready to go play baseball,’ he expressed, acknowledging it as merely the commencement of his ambitions.

Ryan Niedzwiedz, a product of West Aurora, was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round after his tenure at SIU-Edwardsville. Surrounded by supportive family and friends, Niedzwiedz embraced his dream when drafted, excited to begin at Colorado’s Scottsdale facility in Arizona.

On draft weekend, Niedzwiedz appreciated the support, noting, ‘It was really cool just to see how much everyone cares. I appreciate them.’ As a utility player, Niedzwiedz is adaptable for various needs, eager to contribute in any capacity.
