America’s “forever wars” often refer to the prolonged conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These were long and costly military engagements that many feel accomplished little.
Donald Trump won the presidency, in part, by promising to avoid wars like these. Despite this pledge, some argue he might now be involved in another protracted conflict.
Possible Entanglement in Iran
Reporter Steven Erlanger, who covers diplomatic issues, questions if the Iran situation could mimic previous conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Few go to war expecting never-ending battles. However, several American presidents have engaged in conflicts that seem endless. Often, it takes a successor who decides the cost and political fallout are too high, finds a way to declare some form of victory, and withdraws.
Regarding Iran, President Trump may find himself repeating history. Although he campaigned on ending wars, he may face the reality of being drawn into another Middle Eastern conflict, contrary to his original intentions.
