Following an ankle injury in spring 2025, Owen Bohren has made a strong return to the Lincoln-Way East lineup. He scored ten goals last fall despite missing the beginning of the season. However, he felt hesitant on the field as he carefully rebuilt his strength. Now, Bohren, a senior midfielder, feels fully recovered.
“It feels great because I can play to my fullest ability,” Bohren shared. “I don’t have to worry about anything happening again. Last year, I had trouble because it was weak. But now I’m back healthy and it feels amazing.”
Bohren, recruited by Rhode Island, has consistently performed throughout the season for the Griffins. He continued his successful streak by scoring two goals in a 4-1 SouthWest Suburban Conference win against Lockport.
Teammates Charles Lungaro and Jacob Broderick also scored for the Griffins, improving their record to 11-7, 4-2. The victory ended a five-game losing streak. Mateo Espinosa contributed two assists, while Jacen Winefka made seven saves.
“A win like this was crucial because after five consecutive losses, morale was low,” Bohren explained. “We grinded through practice, kept a positive mindset. As a leader, I tell the guys we’ll face both highs and lows, but success depends on overcoming the lows.”
Lockport’s Caleb Trabado, assisted by Sebastian Pakos, scored for his team, finishing 9-5-1, 3-3.
Bohren sprinted through the defense and scored his first goal from ten yards, leading the Griffins to a 2-0 advantage by the 11th minute. He added his second goal, marking his 13th of the season, in the final minute of the game.
Lincoln-Way East coach Matt Ribbens is impressed by Bohren’s ability to create unexpected plays.
“He’s so dynamic,” Ribbens said. “Sometimes you might not understand his actions, but then he surprises you with explosive moves that make perfect sense.”
Senior forward Charles Lungaro commented on Bohren’s leadership during the team’s challenging times.
“He’s a great leader,” Lungaro noted. “Owen’s a talented player with a positive attitude.”
Ribbens observes Bohren playing with renewed vigor after recovering.
“He performed well last year, but was limited athletically,” Ribbens said. “Now, he appears more determined and is leading those in need of guidance.”
Bohren’s enthusiasm for soccer stems from his childhood, influenced by his father, Phillip.
“My dad is from Switzerland, where soccer is popular,” Bohren shared. “I’ve played for as long as I can remember, and it’s fun to share this passion with my dad.”
Bohren recently committed to Rhode Island, proving the injury won’t hinder his aspiration to play Division I soccer.
“Coach Ribbens also played at Rhode Island,” Bohren added. “We often discuss this. It’s been my goal since starting high school, and I’m thrilled for the opportunity.”
