In Madison, Wisconsin, a police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly brandished a knife during a struggle. This incident took place on Wednesday afternoon as officers investigated a report about someone attempting to check vehicle doors, according to the police.
The Madison Police Department responded to a call at around 1 p.m. in the Marquette neighborhood. Chief John Patterson announced this at a news conference. The initial suspect fled on a bicycle, but police re-engaged with him at approximately 1:35 p.m.
Chief Patterson explained that the man either fell or was removed from the bicycle by police. A struggle ensued at an intersection. During this struggle, the man reportedly pulled out a fixed-blade knife, injuring an officer who was trying to arrest him. The police department later released a photo showing the knife on the ground.
A stun gun was employed during the altercation but proved ineffective. The officer injured by the knife discharged his firearm. Video recordings from bystanders were circulated online. One such video, verified by NBC News, displayed officers holding the suspect as shouts of “Let go!” and “He’s got a knife!” were heard.
The footage also showed an officer yelling “Taser!” as the suspect was restrained. About three seconds later, while on the ground, an officer appeared to shoot the man, who then ceased movement.
Chief Patterson emphasized the importance of understanding that videos provide a single perspective. He noted that additional footage, not available online, is being reviewed for a comprehensive view of the incident.
No body camera footage exists, as the officers involved did not have body cameras. The identity of the deceased was not disclosed at the news conference, but he was described as a man in his 30s. Patterson expressed his condolences to the man’s family.
The officer who fired the gun was also not named. Patterson described him as a veteran officer. Madison Council Alder Davy Mayer, representing the area where the incident occurred, communicated with city officials and police regarding the event. He aims to ensure community safety and transparency about the incident.
Four officers were present at the scene. All have been placed on administrative leave, a standard protocol after any police-involved shooting. Michael Doubek, who witnessed and filmed part of the incident, recounted seeing officers struggling with the man before one discharged his weapon.
Following the incident, a large group of protesters gathered. Additionally, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra canceled a planned outdoor event. An independent investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation will occur, with the district attorney also reviewing the incident.
