On Wednesday, Corey Ruiz, identified as Black or Latino, was shot and killed by a Madison police officer following a brief confrontation. This marks the third police-related fatality in the same neighborhood since 2012, sparking renewed demands for police reform and racial justice.

“Our community has spoken loud and clear: this is NOT business as usual,” stated Black activist Clyde Mayberry on Friday.
Protesters disrupted the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra outdoor concert at the Capitol, leading to its cancellation. The event regularly attracts about 30,000 attendees each week during the summer. A planned public market opening and the AtwoodFest neighborhood festival were also affected.
Public Response
In support of the protests, the downtown farmers market closed nearly four hours early on Saturday. The market typically hosts around 20,000 visitors weekly near the Capitol.
“We mourn with our community,” posted market organizers. “And we agree – business cannot proceed as usual.”
