Punch the Monkey Celebrates First Birthday at Japanese Zoo

Punch, an orphaned monkey at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan, has won hearts worldwide. Celebrating his first birthday, Punch has received countless messages from his fans.

Abandoned by his mother soon after birth a year ago due to exhaustion, zookeepers took special care of Punch. They provided him with an orangutan plushie to help him develop essential gripping skills. This was crucial for his survival as a newborn macaque.

Punch is no longer dependent on the plushie and mingles freely with fellow monkeys at the zoo. However, he continues to draw large crowds. Takashi Yasunaga, the head of the zoo, mentioned that Punch received around 2,500 birthday cards from inside and outside Japan. These messages decorate the indoor Punch birthday exhibit, where visitors can also watch videos documenting his early days.

As Punch was trying very hard struggling to live each day, his two keepers did everything they can while other staff watched over him. It was extremely hot when Punch was born. The memory is still clear to me as the hot season returns. — Takashi Yasunaga

In January, following six months of dedicated care, Punch joined the zoo’s monkey enclosure with about 50 other monkeys. His journey captured the public’s interest. In February, images of Punch and his toy shared on social media became a viral sensation. Tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the zoo, many from overseas, boosting its popularity.

When other monkeys initially kept their distance, Punch found solace in his toy orangutan. Supporters rallied around him with messages of encouragement on social media.

Kumi Ishizawa, a Kobe resident, discovered Punch on social media and decided to visit him despite personal challenges. She stated, “He moved me … I kept on telling myself that I’m going to get well and come visit to see Punch.” Her wish came true after recovering from illness.

Yeye Lights, a local resident, became a dedicated Punch fan and now holds an annual zoo pass. Inspired by her daughter in the Philippines, she now celebrates Punch’s milestones. She expressed gratitude to the caretakers, saying, “I have a cake for Punch-kun, I’m celebrating with my friends.”
