The Colorado Buffaloes are gearing up for their first game of the season against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. However, a challenge has arisen that may affect head coach Deion Sanders and his availability for this crucial matchup.
Reports by Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today indicate that Sanders might need to testify in a bankruptcy case involving his son Shilo Sanders. This is set to take place from August 31 to September 4, coinciding with the preparation week leading up to the game on September 3. The judge has noted the conflict and expressed that Deion Sanders may attempt to resist the subpoena.
As the Buffaloes prepare to play Georgia Tech, Deion’s presence could be limited during this critical time. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio mentioned the possibility of Deion filming his testimony, which could prevent him from missing any practices or the game. Yet, if cooperation falters, Sanders may have to leave practices to attend court in Denver.
The University of Colorado has remained silent, declining to comment on the issue despite inquiries from several media outlets.
“The judge noted the conflict with Colorado’s season opener and said he wouldn’t be surprised if Deion Sanders tried to fight the subpoena to testify at the trial,” Schrotenboer wrote.
Having Deion Sanders on the sidelines for the Georgia Tech game is important for the team. The Buffaloes want to avoid starting the season poorly after a challenging previous year. They concluded last season with a 3-9 record, marking their first season without key players Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. The coach is under increased pressure following a five-year, $54 million contract extension signed last March.
In his tenure at Colorado, Sanders has accumulated a 16-21 record, with a 9-18 standing against Big 12 opponents. His record includes one bowl game appearance—the 2024 Alamo Bowl, which the team lost against BYU.
Critics often point out Deion’s performance when lacking key players like Shedeur Sanders and Hunter. Without them, his record stands at 7-12, while he boasts a 36-15 record with them on his team.
