Prada’s New Collection: Jeans-Inspired Looks with a Twist

Milan hosted the latest Prada collection unveiled during Fashion Week. Designers Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons showcased jeans-inspired basics transformed into leather and technical fabrics.

They aimed to create menswear for everyday wear, not only for fashion insiders. The collection featured slim, cropped jackets and five-pocket trousers. These paired with timeless blazers or leather blousons formed the new Prada uniform for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

“Sometimes you need a good pasta pomodoro,” remarked Simons, highlighting simple yet classic essentials.

Despite drawing inspiration from jeans, Prada admitted she never wore a pair, while Simons only recently embraced them again after sticking to wool trousers for years. Nevertheless, five-pocket trousers paired with flat-pocket jackets became the season’s style statement, slim and cropped.

runway saw most looks crafted in luxurious, buttery leather in shades like antique white, gray, burgundy, and turquoise, set to rock guitar tunes. Some outfits used nearly transparent white technical fabric, ideal for Europe’s heatwave. Only a few pieces were made from actual denim.

The collection included cropped shirts and knitwear vests with geometric patterns, complemented by silk scarves tied at the waist. Colorful pouches at the waist, sometimes attached to wide belts, served as the sole accessory. Pointy shoes with multiple Velcro straps completed the ensembles.

Streetwear Influence

Prada emphasized creating universal pieces to avoid “useless design,” which she sees as common on other runways. Simons added that they wanted to reconnect fashion with practical, street-inspired dressing. Historically, some of fashion’s strong ideas emerged from the street, rather than from luxury brands.

“It’s a clear silhouette, vertical, simple, sharp, proud,” Simons described. “A lot of white, peaceful, hopeful, and cleansing.” He believes the collection challenges typical perceptions of luxury in high fashion.

In keeping with simplicity, the collection debuted in a bare showroom with transparent bench seating, offering every attendee a front-row view. The VIP section included NBA star Anthony Edwards, singer and actor Troye Sivan, K-pop group ENHYPEN, and British actor Louis Partridge. Excited fans braved the early summer heat to welcome their favorite celebrities.
