President Trump Unveils New Air Force One Aircraft

President Donald Trump introduced a newly revamped Air Force One aircraft on Friday, during a tour in a private hangar. The aircraft is a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, designated the “VC-25B Bridge,” gifted by the government of Qatar. It underwent a complex $400 million military overhaul, which included installations of secure communications and anti-missile defense systems.

The unveiling took place in a newly built hangar at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The aircraft features a striking paint scheme in dark blue, red, and gold, personally chosen by Trump, replacing the previous light blue design from the Kennedy era. The U.S. Air Force confirmed that the aircraft will undergo initial test flights before it officially begins service for future presidential missions.

This will be a flyover, on July 4th, I think I can say the likes of which we’ve never seen before, Trump stated.

Details of the New VC-25B Bridge Jet

The VC-25B Bridge is a heavily modified Boeing 747-8i jumbo jet, initially configured as a VVIP business liner for Qatar’s royal family. This approach, prioritized for fast delivery, kept the jet’s interior largely intact. The president and press will travel in the original luxury setting which includes high-end wood paneling, leather lounges, and master bedrooms, saving costs of custom building a new interior.

This plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before, Trump commented.

Specifications and Overhaul by L3Harris

Despite maintaining its luxurious interior, L3Harris Technologies implemented a major military overhaul to meet presidential standards. Upgrades included advanced anti-missile systems, severe weather hardening, and encrypted satellite communications for uninterrupted command.

Trump has replaced the JFK-era robin’s egg blue color with a new livery featuring navy blue underbelly, a red stripe, and a white top. This represents a continuation of changes initiated during Trump’s first term, although these changes were reversed by President Biden in March 2023. With Trump’s return to office, his original design has been reinstated. The new color scheme will extend to other government aircraft used by senior officials.

Trump announced plans to use the new aircraft for upcoming international trips, including the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, and further hinted at travel to China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November.

Controversy Over Retrofitting Costs

While the aircraft itself was gifted, the retrofitting cost ignited tensions on Capitol Hill. Initially estimated at $400 million, an additional $934 million transfer from a missile defense program raised concerns from Congress and Democratic lawmakers. Defense officials justified the spending to quickly bridge a gap until Boeing’s replacement jets become available.

Foreign Emoluments Clause Concerns

The acceptance of a luxury aircraft gift valued in the hundreds of millions from a foreign government has raised constitutional questions. Critics argue it may violate the Foreign Emoluments Clause. Notable criticism came from Senator Patty Murray, describing the deal as corrupt and a national security risk. Trump dismissed these criticisms, citing legal approval that plans to transfer ownership to his future presidential library foundation after his term.

Trump acknowledged the delays in Boeing deliveries and explained the decision to use a Qatari plane, emphasizing the need for proper representation of the country.

Legacy Jets Remain in Service

According to an Air Force spokesperson, the current presidential aircraft, known as VC-25As, will continue to be in service alongside the new Qatari aircraft. The Presidential Airlift Group will choose the suitable plane for missions based on operational needs.
