The progressive wing of the Democratic Party gained momentum with a significant victory in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District primary. William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, defeated two establishment-backed candidates on Tuesday night. Lawrence will now compete against current Republican Representative Tom Barrett in the November congressional election.
The victory came at a crucial time for progressives within the Democratic Party. Lawrence defeated former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. Barrett, a military veteran, seeks a second term after running unopposed in the Republican primary. The district’s previous representative, Elissa Slotkin, left the seat to successfully run for Senate in 2024.
House Republican campaign spokesman Mike Marinella commented on the significance of Lawrence’s win. He told Fox News Digital, “The Democrats’ chances of retaining the House majority are decreasing. Each defeat results in a radical nominee, depleted funds, and another critical seat lost.”
Every embarrassing defeat leaves them with a radical socialist nominee, an emptier bank account, and another must-win seat off the board.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), although not officially endorsing Lawrence, have been influential in the race. Lawrence received support from notable progressive figures like Rep. Rashida Tlaib, known for her controversial statements about Israel, and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Founded in 2017 by Lawrence and others, the Sunrise Movement initially focused on promoting the Green New Deal. It worked alongside Congress members to push climate change legislation. The movement has broadened its scope, advocating for policies like removing ICE from cities and defunding the police.
For Republicans, Lawrence’s victory presents an opportunity to challenge the Democratic hold on the House. This battle occurs amid a broader struggle for party control across the United States.
