Puerto Rico Imposes Water Rationing Amid Severe Drought

Puerto Rico is now enforcing water rationing in San Juan due to an ongoing severe drought. This development poses concerns for American tourists planning to visit the island. According to The Associated Press, over 180,000 water customers will experience water outages for 48 hours on a rotating basis starting this Friday.

Historical weather data reveals that July was the driest month San Juan has encountered in more than 120 years, making it the second-hottest on record. The U.S. Drought Monitor indicates that nearly 25% of Puerto Rico falls under severe drought conditions, while another 36% faces moderate drought.

The situation has stirred apprehension among tourists concerning their upcoming visits to the island.

In a Reddit forum focused on travel to Puerto Rico, one tourist expressed worries despite their hotel having an emergency water supply. “Can someone please be realistic about what it’d be like to visit during this?” the user asked. “Will it affect restaurants and bars? Should we cancel even though we likely won’t get anything refunded?”

Responses varied, with some users highlighting that hotels are likely to have cisterns and generators, yet suggested that visitors remain flexible due to the crisis. Another contributor mentioned that while hotels might be less impacted, businesses and restaurants need to adapt as they have during similar situations in the past.

Concerns also emerged with comments highlighting smaller issues travelers might face, such as the absence of ice in drinks or car wash services. Some decided to cancel their trips altogether due to unease.

The original Reddit user updated their post, noting they canceled their trip to Puerto Rico. While refunds were obtained for some expenses, not all costs were recoverable.

This is not the first instance of water-related advisories affecting tourists in tropical regions. Earlier this year, Hawaii officials issued brown water advisories following a storm, which raised concerns over potential contamination from pesticides, sewage, and animal waste.
