Raymond Wright Jr. Faces Life Sentence for Murder of Girlfriend

Raymond Wright Jr., an 18-year-old, awaits sentencing after being found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Samantha Humphrey, in November 2022. At the time of the crime, both Wright Jr. and Humphrey were just 14 years old.

The conviction took place in a New York state courtroom, where Wright Jr. was found guilty of second-degree murder. His sentencing is scheduled for January 20, 2027, where he may face a life sentence, according to reports from local news outlets News 10, WNYT, and WRGB.

Samantha Humphrey went missing on November 25, 2022, and her body was discovered three months later in the Mohawk River, New York. She was last seen by her family at Riverside Park in the Stockade neighborhood of Schenectady.

During a two-week trial, prosecutors presented evidence suggesting Wright Jr. strangled Humphrey following a heated discussion about her potential pregnancy. A medical examiner confirmed her death was due to strangulation. Wright Jr. admitted to punching her and pushing her into the river but denied further involvement.

Prosecutors highlighted DNA evidence, GPS data, and phone records. Moreover, News 10 reported Wright Jr. searched online for information about body decomposition the day after Humphrey disappeared.

Following his conviction, Humphrey’s family expressed their sorrow and disbelief. Jeff Humphrey, her father, spoke on their emotional journey, saying they’ve experienced intense emotions and questioning of the city’s integrity.

He remarked, “What I want people to remember about Sam is, despite the fact that it probably killed her, she was not afraid. She did not live in fear.” Wright Jr. was convicted and subsequently taken into custody, marking a pivotal moment in the tragic case.

Despite the arrest being made in May 2025, the resolution of the case signifies closure for Humphrey’s family, allowing them to reflect on her bravery and the heartache caused by her untimely death.
