The re-release of the movie “Reagan” includes a previously omitted scene featuring a famous line from Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States.
In the scene, Dennis Quaid, portraying President Reagan, delivers a speech at the AFL-CIO’s Building and Construction Trades Department. During the speech, Reagan tells the audience, “You and your forebearers helped build this nation.” He continues with, “Now help us rebuild it. And together, we will make America great again.”
Reagan originally used the phrase “Make America Great Again” during his 1980 presidential campaign. It later became widely recognized when adopted by Donald Trump during his presidential campaigns in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
Director Sean McNamara explained the original exclusion of the scene was due to concerns over potential misinterpretation as electioneering during an election year. He said, “In the middle of a divisive election season when we released the movie, we made the decision to leave out a moment that might have been mistaken for electioneering.” McNamara expressed that its inclusion now aligns with a “special year of celebration.”
The special edition of “Reagan” features an additional ten minutes of unseen footage and is set for a theatrical release on September 25, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Limited screenings will occur in over a dozen cities on July 4, with wider re-release planned for September in 600 theaters.
The additional scenes showcase moments between Reagan and his wife Nancy in the Oval Office, interactions with his alcoholic father, Jack, and glimpses of life at the Reagans’ California ranch, Rancho del Cielo.
Fox Nation’s “Making Reagan” documentary provides an in-depth look at the biopic’s creation. It includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast members such as Elya Baskin, Will Wallace, and Kevin Dillon, as well as archival footage of Reagan.
The movie received mixed reviews but garnered a highly positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
