Record Number of Native American and Indigenous Candidates in 2026 Elections

This year, at least 355 Native American and Indigenous individuals are participating in local, state, and federal elections, both in primary and general contests. This marks a new record for representation.

Deb Haaland, who previously served as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, is campaigning to become governor of New Mexico. If successful, she would be the first Native American woman to assume a governorship in the United States.

In addition, former congresswoman Mary Peltola of Alaska and Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are running for seats in the U.S. Senate. If either candidate wins, they would make history as the first Native American women to serve in the Senate.
