Roland Orzabal, the Tears for Fears star, shares insights into the emotionally challenging final years of his marriage in his new memoir, “Welcome to Your Life.” During this time, his first wife, Caroline, struggled with an alcohol-related illness, ultimately leading to her death. Amid these difficulties, Orzabal found himself falling for another woman, Emily Rath.
Orzabal, known for hits like “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” revealed in an interview with Fox News Digital that sharing these truths was vital. “I didn’t want to write something false,” Orzabal, 64, emphasized. His candidness is grounded in the hope that others experiencing similar situations might find some comfort.
“I’d spent years and years with Caroline in this state,” Orzabal reflected. “It wasn’t just a year or six months. And yes, I had enough. I was shown a clear way forward.”
In October 2016, Orzabal encountered Emily Rath while performing in Colorado. Their immediate connection led Orzabal to express a startlingly clear sentiment—”That’s my wife.” Although married to Caroline, this feeling was undeniable.
Orzabal met Caroline Johnston at the age of 14 and married her in 1982. However, the marriage suffered from significant strain over the years. A volatile relationship ensued as Orzabal’s career flourished, keeping him away for extended periods.
After facing turbulence in the mid-1990s, Orzabal tried to keep his family intact, despite recognizing the pain Caroline endured during their marriage. As they settled into routine drinking by the late 2000s, Caroline’s behavior notably changed around 2011.
Orzabal expanded on the denial he experienced, even when doctors identified alcohol as the primary issue. “Even then I was in denial because I was a wine drinker,” he reflected.
Caroline’s condition worsened, affecting her ability to eat, inducing anxiety, and alienating friends. Orzabal captures her decline in poignant detail, noting seizures, hospital visits, and mental struggles.
By the time Orzabal’s feelings for Rath deepened, Caroline’s struggle was unquestionable, leaving Orzabal facing a painful decision. He writes about choosing life over death, confronting the possibility of leaving the existent burdens for new beginnings.
After Caroline’s death in 2017, Orzabal had to cope with clearing up the aftermath and communicating with family.
In 2019, Orzabal sought rehabilitation for his Ambien addiction, which aided in the journey toward self-forgiveness. The marriage with Rath in 2020 marked a fresh chapter, becoming parents to daughter Eula in 2025.
Orzabal shares appreciation for Emily’s support, stating, “When I think about the person [Caroline] was … she would understand.”
