Saikat Chakrabarti: Campaigning for Pelosi’s Seat

Saikat Chakrabarti, once the chief of staff to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is running for a congressional seat in San Francisco. This district, previously held by Nancy Pelosi, is seeing new contenders as Pelosi retires.

Chakrabarti, a Democratic candidate, has highlighted his past role with Ocasio-Cortez in his campaign. He often references their connection, using it as an anchor for his anti-establishment message. Campaign materials and speeches frequently feature this background, suggesting a long-standing commitment to progressive causes.

Connie Chan, a San Francisco supervisor also campaigning for the same seat, received endorsement from Pelosi. Meanwhile, Chakrabarti’s campaign employs a unique mobile billboard with the phrase, “A.O.C. FIRED SAIKAT,” indicating a complicated past relationship with Ocasio-Cortez.

During his tenure as Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff, Chakrabarti developed a reputation within the Democratic circles. Though he promotes his association with her, Ocasio-Cortez has not reciprocated public acknowledgment in his favor. Her recent endorsements include various left-wing candidates across the country, excluding Chakrabarti.

In the upcoming June primary, two candidates will progress. While Chakrabarti and Chan vie for the second spot, they trail behind State Senator Scott Wiener in recent polls.
