The San Francisco 49ers are grappling with the absence of key linebacker Dre Greenlaw for their Week 6 ‘Monday Night Football’ clash against the Washington Commanders. Greenlaw, central to the 49ers’ defense, received a one-game suspension by the NFL after headbutting Seattle Seahawks’ linebacker Ernest Jones, who lacked a helmet, during a game.
Greenlaw, 29, was ejected following the incident in Sunday’s 32-29 victory over the Seahawks. He contested the suspension, but on Tuesday, the NFL upheld it. NFL’s senior VP of football & international communications, Michael Signora, confirmed the decision on X, noting James Thrash, appointed by both the NFL and NFLPA, upheld the penalty.
Greenlaw, who is second on the team with 37 tackles, only behind Fred Warner who has 50, leaves a noticeable gap in the 49ers’ defensive lineup. The team already struggles with a higher-than-average number of player injuries this season.
Currently, eight players are on injured reserve: defensive tackles Alfred Collins, Sam Okuayinonu, CJ West, defensive ends Andrew Farmer II, Mikail Kamara, linebacker Nick Martin, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safety Darrick Forrest. In addition to Greenlaw, three key players are also sidelined due to injuries: edge-rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr., and safety Marques Sigle.
With linebacker Garret Wallow also expected to miss several games due to a hamstring injury, the 49ers are left with limited options. They will rely on Fred Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, and Ogbo Okoronkwo to cover the linebacker position for the game against Washington.
