World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler addressed the media in a press conference before his first round at the Tour Championship. Competing to secure his second FedExCup trophy at East Lake, Scheffler shared reflections on a significant moment with Tiger Woods during the 2020 Masters.
Recalling their sole competitive round together, Scheffler highlighted a remarkable incident where Woods scored a career-high 10 on the par-3 12th hole at Augusta National. Despite this setback, Woods demonstrated resilience by making birdies on five of his last six holes.
Scheffler expressed admiration for Woods’ mental fortitude on Wednesday. He said, “When I talk about competitive instincts and intensity each week, those are things I learned by observing Tiger. I have only played with him once in competition at the Masters. Watching him read that first putt, I thought, ‘Holy smokes, this guy is focused.’ That intensity he brought to every shot is something I aim to replicate in my game.”
In the 2026 playoffs, Scheffler claimed victory in the first tournament at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, securing the top position. He recently concluded in a tie for 12th at the BMW Championship.
On Thursday, Scheffler will begin his round at 2 p.m. ET, playing alongside Matt Fitzpatrick.
