Scripps National Spelling Bee 2026: A Look at the Competition

The Scripps National Spelling Bee kicks off on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. This event brings together 247 finalists from all 50 states, showcasing the best young spellers in the country. These finalists have emerged from millions of competitors nationwide, each hoping to capture the moment of victory.

This year, ESPN’s Mina Kimes steps into the role of host for the prestigious competition. In anticipation of the event, she sat down for a discussion with Amna Nawaz, the co-anchor and co-managing editor of PBS News Hour.

The Spelling Bee is not only a test of linguistic skills but also a highly anticipated event in educational circles, drawing attention from media and viewers across the nation.
