Sophie Cunningham, a player for the WNBA team Indiana Fever, addressed the issue of rallies that oppose transgender participation in women’s sports, stating she remains focused and undistracted. These rallies have occurred in conjunction with the team’s recent games, including their matchup against the Portland Fire.
Prior to their game on Friday night in Portland, participants showed support for Cunningham’s recent statements about transgender athletes. Approximately two dozen rally attendees and several spectators were present. Cunningham stated, “I think at the end of the day, I come in and I do my job. Everyone who knows me personally knows that I’m full of love. I’m bubbly. I love the people around me, basketball, and inspiring the next generation in a positive light. These protests don’t concern me or my teammates.”
In Seattle, a similar rally took place earlier in the week before the Fever played against the Seattle Storm. These rallies continue to spark discussions on transgender athletes’ participation in sports. Cunningham expressed her disconnection from the rallies, viewing them as an exercise of free speech. “Props to them, props to everyone who is able to be competent and courageous enough to speak their truths,” she commented.
Another rally is planned for when the Fever play the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis on Sunday. During the Seattle rally, supporters promoted a statewide ballot initiative, IL26-638, which aims to prevent transgender students from joining girls’ athletics in Washington schools. Cunningham received support from rally organizer Amy Souza, who praised her commitment to protecting women’s sports.
At the Portland game, some attendees expressed their opposition to Cunningham’s views by waving small transgender flags. Despite the controversy, the Fever managed to secure a victory against the Fire, winning 112-98. Cunningham scored 13 points, and her teammate Caitlin Clark achieved a triple-double.
Fever Coach Stephanie White acknowledged the controversy’s impact on the team’s focus, expressing a desire to keep discussions centered around basketball. “There is frustration because we want to talk about basketball,” White stated, emphasizing the league’s need to manage and lead conversations while growing.
