In the previous season, South Elgin’s Jonathan Niksich took his place as an emerging talent. However, his journey this season started with challenges. Following his initial difficulties, Niksich decided he needed a change. His approach shifted to simplicity: stop overthinking and play with clarity.
That decision proved crucial when facing Bartlett in a high-stakes match. The Upstate Eight Conference title was on the line. The game was intense and reached an unexpected pause after 14 innings, still tied 0-0, due to darkness.
Niksich’s entry came as a relief for Zacharia Barkho, South Elgin’s ace, who had exhausted his pitch count after eight impressive innings. Taking over, Niksich dominated in relief for six innings, securing 11 strikeouts with minimal hits and walks. Barkho had previously struck out 13 while allowing only two hits and one walk.
South Elgin’s Alex Muro contributed with two hits, while Niksich’s focus remained strong.
Bartlett’s team, comprising Brandon Pelz, Aiden Mertes, and Joe Kennedy, displayed remarkable pitching skill. They achieved 12 strikeouts across 14 shutout innings, allowing only five hits and three walks. Notably, Barkho was the sole player to reach third base, emphasizing the rivalry’s competitive nature.
Niksich was inspired by Barkho’s spirited performance against Bartlett. Reflecting on his role, Niksich felt shared energy and confidence with Barkho.
Niksich stated, “Based on how he performed, I knew I was going to do the same. He passed the energy back down to me.”
Coach David Palmer of South Elgin recognized Niksich’s willingness to embrace the moment. He lauded Niksich’s enduring energy throughout the game.
“Johnny was unbelievable,” Palmer remarked. “To see him working at that pace is fun to watch.”
The energy was palpable even between starters Barkho and Pelz. Barkho expressed his enthusiasm for facing Bartlett. The game continued with constant shifts of momentum. Pelz matched Barkho’s intensity, making it a classic contest.
“I love playing Bartlett,” Barkho shared. “Every inning felt fresh.”
A battle between two top pitchers made Bartlett’s coach, Alex Coan, aware of the challenge.
“We trust him in big moments like that,” Coan said of Pelz. “Two of the best pitchers in our conference. It was a dogfight.”
The match was described by Palmer as one of the “craziest games” he’s witnessed. He aimed for consistency despite adverse conditions.
Niksich remained confident during the match. Prepared and energetic, his performance became a testament to his growth.
Reflecting on Niksich’s progress, Palmer was satisfied with his evolution.
“He wants to work quick,” Palmer said. “He dominates. My better is better than your better.”
South Elgin’s match against Bartlett showcased the intense rivalry and Niksich’s potential as a junior talent.
