Spanish forward Borja Iglesias approaches the most significant match of his career, the World Cup final against Argentina, scheduled for Sunday afternoon at New York/New Jersey Stadium. This event holds special importance as President Donald Trump is expected to attend, potentially greeting Iglesias after the match if Spain wins.
Despite the potential honor of shaking hands with the president, Iglesias has openly criticized Trump. In a conversation with Spanish media on Saturday, Iglesias expressed his reluctance, stating, “I don’t want to go to prison.” He added, “I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy, and that it passes very quickly and I can forget about it.”
Iglesias emphasized his desire to avoid controversy during this crucial moment, stating, “I don’t think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think. I would love to do many things, but the reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don’t have that much power to tackle certain things.”
Known for his outspoken views, Iglesias has previously supported pro-Palestinian protests and criticized the former Spanish soccer federation boss after an inappropriate gesture during the FIFA Women’s World Cup celebration. He remarked that Trump “struggles” with individuals who advocate “for progress and for fundamental values.”
As the final approaches, Trump plans to participate in the trophy presentation ceremony, having done so during the FIFA Club World Cup. On December 5, 2025, he received the FIFA Peace Prize from Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Official Draw held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
Spain will face Argentina on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET, with the match broadcast on FOX.
