House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed concerns about how students view the United States during a recent event organized by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). This event celebrated the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. Johnson emphasized the challenge of younger generations not fully appreciating the nation’s history and values.
ADF’s Summit 2026, held in San Diego, brought together leaders from various sectors such as law, media, and education. The event highlighted the significance of the Declaration of Independence and the founders’ beliefs. Johnson, a keynote speaker, reiterated the importance of preserving these foundational truths.
Kristen Waggoner, ADF’s president and CEO, remarked, “ADF was deeply honored to welcome Speaker Johnson… His remarks on America’s spiritual heritage provided the ideal capstone to our week at Summit.”
Speaking at the summit, Johnson expressed his commitment to educating young Americans about the nation’s history. He shared his approach of engaging university students in discussions, often finding a minority who acknowledge America as the greatest nation.
Johnson voiced his concerns about educational indoctrination, highlighting the misperception among students about America’s legacy. He saw the nation’s 250th anniversary as a pivotal moment to address this issue by revisiting the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence.
Johnson’s involvement with ADF and his focus on educational reform underscores the broader discourse on political and cultural influences within academia. Recent data from Gallup shows only 38% of U.S. adults retain high confidence in higher education, partly due to perceived political indoctrination.
Additionally, the America First Policy Institute reported a significant disparity between liberal and conservative faculty in universities. Liberal faculty members now outnumber conservatives nearly 7-to-1. This represents a dramatic change from a 2-to-1 ratio observed in 1969.
