The potential of St. Charles North’s Mason Netcel has always been evident. He joined varsity during his freshman year. The senior infielder’s commitment to Division I Indiana State last September highlighted his skills.
Overcoming his struggles with mindset, particularly when things didn’t go his way, has been a significant focus for Netcel this season. This shift in approach has elevated his game.
I’m happier with the mental side than the stats,
Netcel shared. My main goal this year was to be more positive and not let things get to me as much. It can be challenging, but I’m proud of how I’ve managed it.
Discussions about mental aspects in sports have become more common. For Netcel, embracing this focus has been crucial.
It was huge for me because as a kid, striking out would make me fume,
Netcel explained. Learning to manage that and not bring it onto the field is significant.
Coach Todd Genke has observed Netcel’s progress with pride. He’s grown up a lot,
Genke said. We’ve given him leadership responsibilities, and he’s matured into them. He’s special—often the most talented on the field. He handles adversity much better now,
Genke added.
As a former minor league pitcher, Genke understands the expectations Netcel faces. Having talent is tough, especially when it’s natural,
Genke noted. The expectations can weigh heavy.
Netcel’s final season for St. Charles North (20-12-1) has been strong. Ahead of Wednesday’s Class 4A regional semifinal against Dundee-Crown, Netcel has impressive stats: a .320 batting average, 31 runs, 13 doubles, five home runs, and 19 RBIs. His .492 on-base percentage includes 22 walks and 11 hit-by-pitches. He’s an incredibly hard worker,
said Genke. With talent, willingness to learn, and work ethic, special things are possible. He’s a great teammate.
Despite only receiving offers from Indiana State and a junior college in Wisconsin, Netcel remained optimistic. It was tough,
he admitted. I saw my peers getting Big Ten offers and I thought I played just as well.
After proving himself at Indiana State’s camp, Netcel got his desired offer. I didn’t have much else, but I loved playing,
Netcel said. I felt I belonged there.
Netcel aims to make a significant impact before heading to Terra Haute. We’re feeling good going into the postseason,
he said. We believe we can advance far.
