Stephen A. Smith, a prominent ESPN personality famous for his criticism of the New York Knicks, recently changed his stance. The longtime critic acknowledged the remarkable achievement by the Knicks who secured their first NBA championship in over fifty years.
Smith joined Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart for a live recording of the ‘Roommates Show’ podcast, hosted at the Infosys Theater in Madison Square Garden. This event followed the Knicks’ championship parade held the previous day. During the live taping, Smith encountered boos from the audience as he took the stage. The reaction intensified when Hart reminded Smith of his previous criticism of the team.
“We are now sitting here with this golden trophy there to your right. Can you sit here and admit you were wrong?” Hart asked Smith, referring to his statements about Villanova’s 2016 roster and Brunson’s signing.
The Knicks, with the help of Brunson, Hart, and Mikal Bridges, achieved their victory after Smith expressed doubt about Brunson’s impact on the team after his 2022 signing. Brunson had become a pivotal figure in the team’s success.
Smith responded with an apology, acknowledging his past mistakes. He stated, “I was beyond wrong. I’m apologizing to this brother on national television; I’m apologizing to you; I’m apologizing to the entire Knicks organization.” Though he expressed joy at being proven wrong, Smith suggested that his criticism might have spurred the team to succeed.
“But let me be very clear: if it means another championship, I would do it again,” he added.
The podcast episode featured appearances from Karl-Anthony Towns, Miles McBride, and former Knicks star Carmelo Anthony.
Stephen A. Smith’s acknowledgment not only highlights the Knicks’ triumph but also reflects on the dynamic between media criticism and team performance. His shift from criticism to praise marks a significant moment in his career and the Knicks’ history.
