A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday. The tremor registered a magnitude of 7.1, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The U.S. Geological Survey reported it as a 6.8 magnitude quake. The epicenter was near Kumamoto city, roughly 600 miles south of Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert. They warned of waves about one yard high. Fortunately, there were no initial reports of damage or casualties. Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority also found no abnormalities at nuclear power plants in the area.
The earthquake hit the highest level, a seven, on Japan’s Shindo scale, indicating a severe tremor. Reporters in Tokyo noted the significance of the event, watching news unfold from their offices.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu reported no threat to Hawaii or American Samoa. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi advised residents to stay away from coastlines in the affected regions. She mentioned the government’s establishment of a task force to evaluate potential damage and prepare for any necessary rescue missions. “We are putting people’s lives as the top priority,” Takaichi emphasized, urging caution amid possible strong aftershocks.
Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency stated there were no immediate reports of damage to key public facilities or infrastructure. Assessments were ongoing. High-speed Shinkansen bullet trains and local trains in Kyushu were temporarily halted for safety inspections, a standard procedure following earthquakes.
