Kate Fink, a breast cancer survivor, attributes part of her success to an unexpected source: the hospital valet at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. Fink speaks highly of Jon Avery, the valet who parks cars with unparalleled joy and infectious optimism.
Avery stands out for his approach to his job. He aims to create meaningful encounters with every patient. Despite the challenges these patients face, Avery’s positivity provides hope. Fink says that his words of encouragement, telling her to ‘keep pushing’ and ‘you got this,’ helped her maintain a positive mindset through her treatment.
Inspired by Avery’s kindness, Fink wanted to show her appreciation. Avery had once mentioned his dream of attending a Buffalo Bills game. Seizing the opportunity, Fink and her colleagues at West Herr Automotive Group raised funds to get Avery tickets and field passes to a game.
Avery was deeply touched, though he humbly stated that the gesture was more than he expected. ‘I serve people, that’s what I do,’ he said, emphasizing the value he places on service and the impact he hopes it makes on those he interacts with.
