Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia triumphed in the Tour de France on Sunday, marking his fifth victory in the prestigious race. He crossed the finish line in Paris shortly before 8 p.m. local time.
The concluding stage of this iconic cycling event commenced approximately at 5:50 p.m. on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The start experienced a slight delay due to adjustments following wildfires in the southwest of France. These fires necessitated route modifications as security forces and police were reallocated to assist with the emergency situation.
Initially, the final stage was planned to set off in Thoiry, located around 56 kilometers west of Paris, before heading into the city. Ultimately, Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel clinched the final stage victory with a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes, and 49 seconds.
Pogačar’s overall time for the race was 73 hours, 56 minutes, and 26 seconds. This timing placed him almost six and a half minutes ahead of his closest rival, Remco Evenepoel of Belgium.
By achieving his fifth win, Pogačar equaled the record for the most Tour de France victories. He now shares this esteemed standing with legendary cyclists Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Induráin. It’s worth noting that Lance Armstrong initially won seven titles but later faced disqualification due to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.
