With the MLB postseason underway, each team aims for the World Series trophy, hoping their stars can shine at critical moments. However, past champions know winning requires more than standout players. It demands the combined effort of everyone involved.
Anthony Rizzo, World Series champion and three-time All-Star first baseman, highlighted this truth. Rizzo played a key role in the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series win against the Cleveland Guardians, ending a 108-year title drought.
“It takes all 26 guys, it takes your entire staff,” Rizzo explained in an interview with OutKick.
He emphasized the crucial roles played by various team members. Stars like himself and Kris Bryant celebrated on the field, but Rizzo acknowledged the importance of every player, coach, and even clubhouse attendants during October baseball.
“Everyone’s so important to a team,” Rizzo noted, underscoring the significance of the ‘Low Key Legends’—the unsung heroes within a team.
He recalled his own ‘Low Key Legend,’ Danny Mueller, the Cubs’ clubhouse attendant. According to Rizzo, Mueller was an essential part of his routine, always providing energy and support. Moreover, Rizzo praised his hitting coaches for their behind-the-scenes work, preparing scouting reports and ensuring he could play without distraction.
During the postseason, teams bond like families. Rizzo reflected on these strong bonds, fostered over 200-plus days together each year. This camaraderie means players know when to support each other, reinforcing the family-like atmosphere in the clubhouse.
Success in critical games requires more than just stars; it relies on collective effort. The Milwaukee Brewers exemplified this in Game 2 of their National League Division Series (NLDS) against the San Diego Padres. While Jackson Chourio’s walk-off moment grabbed headlines, Rizzo highlighted Gary Sanchez’s uncelebrated role. Sanchez, pinch-hitting, took a pivotal walk to load the bases, setting up Chourio’s game-winning hit.
Rizzo’s point underscores that while star players are vital, the full team, including those behind the scenes, plays a crucial role in achieving success.
These unsung heroes often make the difference between going home empty-handed or becoming champions.
