The University of Tennessee is experiencing a difficult offseason. The dismissal of Chaz Coleman, a five-star transfer edge rusher from Penn State, caused initial stirrings. However, the situation worsened on Wednesday when the NCAA suspended star linebacker Arion Carter for multiple games.
According to Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News, “Tennessee star linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for two games by the NCAA because he returned to college after his agent had paid for a $427 flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility.”
The violation’s context raises questions. Carter initially declared for the 2026 NFL draft, but withdrew post-injury, which required surgery. His agent financed a flight for him, which Carter repaid. Yet, the NCAA labeled this an “impermissible benefit,” prompting disciplinary action.
“NCAA rules are clear: student-athletes may not sign with agents to pursue NFL draft opportunities, and this student-athlete knowingly violated those longstanding rules,” stated the NCAA. “When student-athletes violate NCAA rules, the school declares them ineligible and works with the national office to determine requirements for reinstatement, which can include repayment and/or withholding from competition.”
This suspension affects Tennessee’s games against Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12. Carter, a key defensive player, will be absent. In the previous season, Carter achieved second-team All-SEC honors with 76 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
Although losing Carter might not drastically impact UT’s season, the team feels the weight of his absence. Coach Josh Huepel expressed disappointment, telling Knoxville News, “We disagree with the NCAA’s ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall. Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being.”
Carter will graduate in August with Dean’s List honors in public health. The team remains in strong support of him and looks forward to his participation in upcoming training camps.
