Tensions Rise as Two Groups Vie for Control of America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations

Construction activities are underway on the National Mall for the Great American State Fair, orchestrated as part of the country’s 250th birthday celebrations. President Trump sidestepped an existing congressional commission, forming his own group to plan the events. This decision has led to a deeply partisan celebration, with many celebrities expressing dissatisfaction and general confusion surrounding the events.

A decade prior to the milestone anniversary, Congress established a bipartisan commission, named America 250, to manage the celebrations. The intention was for America 250 to develop infrastructure projects, create educational resources, and oversee appropriate activities to honor the anniversary.

However, as the Fourth of July approaches, a separate entity known as Freedom 250, created by Trump, has assumed control over major events. Freedom 250 now leads in executing Trump’s ambitious plans, which feature a triumphal arch, a National Garden of American Heroes, and the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. A recent event organized by Freedom 250 was an Ultimate Fighting Championship cage match on the White House lawn.

The emergence of two separate groups tasked with planning the anniversary celebrations highlights governmental disarray and intense partisanship, typically a time for national togetherness. Behind this divide, Trump’s readiness to bypass Congress and imprint his personal mark on these grand celebrations stands evident.

Congressional Democrats perceive Freedom 250 as a usurpation of what should represent a nonpartisan national celebration. Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman from New Jersey, a Democrat and member of America 250 since 2019, criticized Freedom 250 as a self-indulgent project reflecting the president’s unbounded ego.
