Extreme Athlete Andrew Lewis Dies in Utah BASE Jumping Accident

Andrew Lewis, 39, widely recognized for his performance during a Super Bowl halftime show, tragically lost his life in an accident. Known for his involvement in various extreme sports, Lewis operated an adventure sports business.

Over the weekend, a BASE jumping attempt in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah resulted in the deaths of Lewis and another individual. This event took place in Mineral Bottom, a secluded desert area within a canyon in Grand County, Utah. Local authorities responded to reports of the incident on Sunday.

Andrew Lewis, famous for his extreme tightrope walking feats, was one of the two victims pronounced dead at the scene. He gained fame for stunts performed high above oceans, waterfalls, and deserts. His business, BASE Jump Moab, provided excursions in Utah for BASE jumping enthusiasts. BASE jumping involves parachuting from buildings, antennas, spans, and earth surfaces.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found Lewis and his companion, Danny Joe Kregle, appearing to have been involved in a tandem BASE jump. Kregle, in his 50s, died on impact. Lewis survived for about three hours while emergency medical workers tried to save him.

The sheriff’s office, led by Jamison Wiggins, is investigating the cause of both deaths. The connection between Lewis and Kregle remains unclear. Mineral Bottom is a known spot for BASE jumping, despite its lack of cellular reception and its distance from Moab, Utah, which can require an hour’s drive.
