Texas Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico quickly identified Alyssa Edwards as his favorite drag queen in the state during a campaign event. Edwards is known as a drag performer who works with children. Talarico’s previous comments on gender and sexuality have been a point of contention in the Senate race. These include his statement that ‘God is nonbinary’ and his 2023 acclaim for Texas having ‘some of the best drag queens in the nation.’
At a recent event, a man greeted Talarico and commended him for his support of drag performances. Talarico responded without hesitation, naming Alyssa Edwards as his favorite. This comes after the Washington Free Beacon highlighted a 2021 event in Taylor, Texas. At that event, Talarico was associated with a drag performance by an 11-year-old under the name Kween Kee Kee.
Talarico’s mention of Alyssa Edwards refers to Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson, who adopts this stage name. Johnson is a supporter of youth drag shows. He has shared in interviews that performing with young dancers at World Pride in New York was a significant experience. Johnson’s work, including with young dancers, was also documented in the 2018 Netflix series, ‘Dancing Queen.’
When questioned about his encounter and comments, Talarico’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, redirected criticism towards Talarico’s Republican opponent, Ken Paxton. Ennis implied Paxton was more of a performer, accusing him of offering advantageous deals to convicts.
In a separate inquiry by Fox News, Talarico acknowledged past misstatements on gender-related topics. He clarified his stances, noting a shift in his understanding of certain issues. He remarked on the political focus being diverted to these discussions rather than other pressing issues, such as fuel prices.
