The 158th Belmont Stakes: Key Details and Highlights

The Belmont Stakes, part of the Triple Crown series, will take place this Saturday. Known as “The Test of the Champion,” this event will occur at Saratoga Race Course for the third consecutive year. This shift from its traditional location at Belmont Park is due to ongoing renovations. Consequently, the race covers a shorter distance of 1 1/4 miles, rather than the customary 1 1/2 miles.

Sovereignty, a previous Belmont Stakes winner, was victorious at Saratoga Race Course in 2025. Golden Tempo, the Kentucky Derby winner, will return to compete. However, Napoleon Solo, who won the Preakness Stakes, will not participate, nor will any other horse from that race.

Competitors and Odds

Nine horses will vie for a $2 million prize. Listed below are the horses with their jockeys and current betting odds:

  • Vitruvian Man (Antonio Fresu) – 17-1
  • Powershift (Luis Saez) – 11-1
  • Chief Wallabee (Junior Alvarado) – 6-1
  • Renegade (Irad Ortiz Jr.) – 2-1
  • Ottinho (Dylan Davis) – 19-1
  • Growth Equity (Manuel Franco) – 11-1
  • Commandment (John Velazquez) – 5-1
  • Emerging Market (Flavien Prat) – 5-1
  • Golden Tempo (José Ortiz) – 9-2

Top Contenders

Renegade, having secured second place in the Kentucky Derby, comes in with the strongest odds at 2-1. Both Emerging Market and Commandment are at 5-1. Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux, offers odds of 9-2. Another notable participant, Chief Wallabee, trained by Bill Mott, holds 6-1 odds.

Current Discussions

Golden Tempo, after winning the Kentucky Derby, skipped the Preakness Stakes similar to Sovereignty last year. Sovereignty later won the Belmont Stakes. If Golden Tempo wins, trainer Cherie DeVaux will make history as the first female to win multiple Triple Crown races in a single year.

Five Kentucky Derby runners will compete in this event: Golden Tempo, Chief Wallabee, Renegade, Commandment, and Emerging Market. Weather forecasts predict potential rain during the race in Saratoga.
