The Importance of Maintaining Democratic and Public Resources

Democracy requires vigilant maintenance, much like physical infrastructure.

Ensuring the preservation of shared resources and equitable access to them is essential, not extreme. Addressing issues proactively can prevent significant problems in the long run.

Like buildings, republics can suffer from postponed upkeep. Neglecting roof leaks and relying solely on temporary fixes, such as using buckets, leads to deterioration over time. Similarly, concentrating power within a small group of elites and corporations, facilitated by unregulated dark money, weakens democratic systems.

Moreover, legislative actions aimed at suppressing voter turnout undermine voting rights, causing democracies to decline. These examples show how careful attention and intervention are crucial to prevent both physical and political structures from falling into disrepair.

Taking proactive measures is key to sustaining both built environments and the institutions that govern us. Failing to maintain either can result in irreversible damage.
