Three men received 47-month prison sentences for stealing a Romanian gold helmet and bracelets from a Dutch museum. A court in Northern Netherlands noted the severity of the crime warranted imprisonment.
The January heist involved explosives to open a museum door, the Drents Museum reported. Security footage showed the suspects using a crowbar and detonating an explosive.
The stolen items, including the Cotofenesti helmet and three bracelets from the Dacia civilization, were on loan for an exhibition. The museum’s director termed it a ‘dark day’ for the institution. These items were described by Bucharest’s National History Museum interim director as critical relics of Romania’s history.
Two bracelets and the helmet were recovered this year after prosecutors negotiated with two thieves who assisted in recovery efforts for lighter sentences. The third bracelet remains missing. Museum officials confirmed the return of the bracelets in perfect condition, while the helmet sustained minor damage.
Originally insured for $6.6 million, the court highlighted that the artifacts are priceless due to their cultural significance. The recovered items have been returned to Romania, valued as part of the cultural heritage for future generations.
Despite only two suspects aiding in the recovery, all three received reduced sentences as judges determined they should all benefit from the artifacts’ return.
