Authorities reported that two people, including an infant, lost their lives following a boating accident near Liberty Island in New York Harbor on Saturday night.
The New York Police Department stated officers received a call about an overturned boat near Liberty Island around 10:25 p.m.
Before police arrived, twelve individuals were rescued from the water. NYPD divers later discovered an adult female and an infant in the water. They were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn in critical condition but were pronounced dead. Their identities have not been disclosed.
A separate boating incident involving a repeat offender resulted in a fatal 80-mph collision, prosecutors stated.
The vessel involved in the accident was identified as a 22-foot bowrider. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Scuba Team, and Aviation Unit worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to manage the scene.
Some of the other passengers were taken to the hospital but are reportedly stable. The cause of the capsizing is under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
