Trump-Backed Candidate Leads in Colombian Presidential Race

Abelardo De La Espriella, a lawyer without any prior political experience, seems to be on the brink of winning Colombia’s presidential election. Such a victory would mark a shift towards the right in Latin America, aligning with President Trump’s endorsement.

De La Espriella, known for his transition from a Miami attorney to a populist wearing casual attire, garnered nearly 49.7% of the votes, according to preliminary data from the electoral agency. On the other hand, Iván Cepeda, a left-wing senator and advocate for human rights, secured about 48.7%, with over 99% of votes counted.

His win would signify a return to conservative government in Colombia after a four-year period under Gustavo Petro, the nation’s first leftist leader. This election result also signifies a general rightward trend in Latin America during Trump’s second presidential term.

At 47, De La Espriella’s campaign was vibrant, featuring digital imagery that included machine-generated flames and A.I. videos with tigers, his campaign mascot. The use of anti-Petro chants elevated his status to that of a celebrity.

De La Espriella pledged to rid Colombia of leftist influences and requested that the Trump administration target his political adversaries, leading to criticism labeling him as a potential autocrat.

His policy proposals reflect a common right-wing agenda in the region. He promised to enhance security in response to crime fears, claimed the left had led the country toward economic decline, and aimed to eliminate corruption.
